Who is stealing the king's golden apples? The magical firebird thinks herself clever, until she falls into the clutches of Baba Yaga the Witch

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 3 Listening to this musical adventure is like sitting down in a theater to watch a Broadway show. Based on a Russian folk tale, it is the story of the Firebird, who falls into the clutches of Baba Yaga the Witch. Princess Vassilisa proves herself more worthy than her two brothers to find the Firebird. With the aid of the Grey Wolf, Vassilisa performs the tasks demanded by the witch before she can claim the Firebird. Vassilisa's persistence defeats the witch, but only the Firebird can save her from the treachery of her evil brothers. Eleven original tunes are interspersed throughout the story, including "Clever Firebird," "Wing Over Wing," "The Moon Is in a Dazzle," "Horse with the Golden Mane," and seven others. These songs feature musical styles as diverse as swirling ska, reggae, steamy jazz ballad, and pulsing voodoo drums. Writer and producer Keith Bilderbeck, who has created sound effects for The Santa Clause, Ferngully, A Knight's Tale, and Star Trek: The Next Generation, has produced a top-notch recording. All of the talented voice actors, singers, musicians, and sound engineers have backgrounds in show business. Bilderbeck adapted this folk tale when his young son began craving scary stories. And The Firebird has enough suspense and thrills to entertain youngsters without terrifying them. A truly inspired effort. -Beverly Bixler, San Antonio Public Library, TX (c) Copyright 2010.
