Summary

Summary

What does the Bible say to a young mother at home nursing her baby? What role models for intelligent, talented women can we find in Scripture? What was everyday life like for women in biblical times? What does Scripture say to women who have been abused or raped? What can men learn from women by viewing Scripture through their concerns and insights? This surprising commentary searches Scripture in light of the many theological, biblical, sociological and psychological concerns of women. Led by editors Catherine Clark Kroeger and Mary J. Evans, an international team of contributors offers thoughtful, engaging insight to complement more traditional approaches that have viewed Scripture primarily through the experiences and understanding of men. Fresh, practical and helpful, the IVP Women's Bible Commentary shows how relevant Scripture is to the legitimate concerns of men and women alike--and just how transforming God's Word can be when viewed from unaccustomed perspective. This reference work will be welcomed by pastors developing sermons, by Bible study teachers and leaders preparing lessons, by college and seminary students researching study assignments, and by individual readers who want to broaden their understanding of the richness of biblical revelation.

Library Journal Review

Some 88 women and men from around the world here provide commentary on most passages of the 66 books of the Protestant Bible, focusing on the meaning behind biblical gender interpretations. Designed to complement rather than supplement traditional biblical commentaries, their contributions are enhanced by 77 brief articles and 50-plus illustrations, tables, and more, all of which provide insight into biblical times and customs. Most of the commentary and brief articles include a basic bibliography, and both a scriptural and a supplementary article index enhance the volume. The inclusion of more Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox scholarship and full commentary instead of just an article on intertestamental history and literature would have increased the comprehensiveness and scope of this book, but it is nevertheless an admirable and very useful volume for lay people, clergy, and even biblical scholars. It is also the only commentary available with this specific focus; Women in Scripture: A Dictionary of Named and Unnamed Women in the Hebrew Bible, the ApocryphalDeuterocanonical Books, and the New Testament is differently organized and comments on the women rather than on the biblical passages. Highly recommended. Carolyn M. Craft, Longwood Coll., Farmville, VA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Choice Review

The editors and contributors write from a woman's perspective, seeking to explain the Scriptures "in ways that are relevant [to women]." Besides exegetical commentary, supplementary articles treat specific women in the Bible as well as topics related to women, their work, and their lives in biblical times. Articles are signed and a roster of contributors is given at the front. Black-and-white illustrations and some tables complement the text. Brief bibliographies and cross-references are found throughout. Indexes of scriptural passages and articles and a list of transliterations are also included. The text is well planned and easy to follow. This work is meant to complement existing commentaries, not to replace them. Recommended for all readers, particularly students of feminist hermeneutics and theology. D. L. Luce Faulkner University
