Summary

Summary

A unique dictionary of astronomy specifically written for practical amateur astronomers. In addition to definitions, it provides an invaluable reference source for terms, techniques, instruments, formulas and processes for practising observers, both amateur and professional. A special feature of this dictionary is extended definitions for many topics; they give sufficient information for many of the techniques and items of instrumentation to be used as well as understood. With over 200 illustrations and extensive appendices, this is an essential reference book for every astronomer.

Choice Review

Kitchin has found a niche for a new dictionary of astronomy, a large-format dictionary that is partly a handbook, with many explanations or techniques and methods instead of unadorned definitions. The 273 excellent illustrations that accompany more than 1,500 entries are one of the book's strengths. Entries vary in length from a single line to a full page or more. Amateur astronomers, beginner to advanced, will find this dictionary useful; even professionals will find useful information. Twelve appendixes include a list of astronomical societies and an excellent, current bibliography. Highly recommended for all libraries, especially at its modest price. J. O.
