Author Notes

Brooks McNamara (1937-2009) was a theater historian known for his work on the Shubert Archive. McNamara also served as a professor of performance studies at New York University. A large portion of his scholarly work focused on popular--but academically overlooked--entertainment, such as vaudeville and pageant shows. His works include Step Right Up, The Shuberts of Broadway: A History Drawn from the Collection of the Shubert Archive , and Plays from the Contemporary American Theater .
