Booklist Review

Headlines about out-of-sync CEO pay dominate not only financial but also news pages, with increasing backlash from stakeholders. Taking a traditional consulting approach, the Higginses (father and son) first outline the business case for changing the classic compensation system--in terms of encouraging ownership thinking, corporate strategic engines, and human potential principles--and then detail the methodology. There is, in truth, nothing here that would strike seasoned HR executives as novel; on the other hand, acronyms are explained in an all-inclusive way and linked with the main thesis: that compensation for any employee must be aligned with corporate performance. Simplistic views of stakeholder coaching and change management are folded into the mix, with adequate justification for the use of these techniques. An introduction to the subject that will educate laypeople about a better way to conduct American business. Barbara Jacobs
