Library Journal Review

For believers or interested readers who are not career academics, the Wisdom or so-called inspired books of the Hebrew Scriptures have always formed something of a puzzle. The wisdom imparted in Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, and the Wisdom of Solomon is equivocal and perhaps even worldly. Here, Fischer (Interpreting the Bible) successfully uses rhetorical or reader-response criticism to make these at times difficult texts more approachable, and even to reveal the comedy inherent in some passages. The author's innovative and thoughtful approach deserves the attention of many readers. Highly recommended for most collections. (c) Copyright 2010.
