Summary

Summary

On The Andy Griffith Show, deputy Barney Fife's duties included fly swatting and changing the jail's pillowcases. As a kid, Mike Brady of The Brady Bunch was the checkers champion of Chestnut Street. Whether it's called trivia, nostalgia, or useless information, over 9,700 facts from 168 television series broadcast from 1948 through 1984 on ABC, NBC, and CBS and in syndication can be found in this work. It covers the popular, well-known series but also the lesser-known series that were a part of television's earlier days. Information on the origins, spin-offs, television movie updates, and extension series is given for the more popular series.

Booklist Review

Almost 170 sitcoms--from The Abbott and Costello Show to WKRP in Cincinnati--are listed in alphabetical order. For each show, details such as character names (and variations), addresses, cars and license plate numbers, pets, favorite foods, and important episode plots appear in narrative form, which makes for good reading but also makes it difficult to find answers to reference questions. The shows were broadcast between January 1, 1948, and December 31, 1984. Related information includes reunion shows, radio origins, syndication, and spin-offs. Entries range in size from one paragraph for shows that were not on very long or for which there are only a few existing episodes (The Hathaways, Karen, My Little Margie), to several pages for those that were long-running and popular (Andy Griffith, Cheers, Leave it to Beaver). Defining a sitcom would have been helpful and might have explained the omission of shows such as F-Troop and Julia. What could have been an excellent manual for TV trivia buffs has several errors. For example, in the entry for The Addams Family, one of Gomez's nicknames for Morticia is given as "Caita," not "Querida." In the entry for M*A*S*H, Major Winchester's sister is mistakenly called "Hanoria" rather than "Honoria." Cheers' Cliff Claven belongs to the Knights of the Scimitar, not, as it is spelled here, "Semitar." These are small details, but in a resource like this, details count. The book is fun, nicely written, and filled with facts, much of them just what people want to know. It is clear that the homework has been exhaustively done for the shows that are included and that the author has a love for the subject. A little more research, editing, or clarification would have made this an even better book.
