Booklist Review

Ages 4-7. In this self-esteem builder the folk of Deadwood decide to pit five-year-old Deadwood Deb, who can "out-lasso . . . out-snarl . . . and out-eat even the toughest cowboy," against a trio of outlaws. Deb, however, turns out to be in Florida, wrestling alligators, so the duty falls to Deb's teddy-bear-loving twin, Audrey. Unfortunately, Audrey's tentative impersonation of her rough, tough sister doesn't fool the baddies for a minute. In energetic cartoons, Runert puts an all-child cast in Wild West foreground settings that float in front of bright orange and red desert landscapes. Audrey is eventually able to put on a show convincing enough to send the outlaws packing, thereby earning a change of moniker from Ordinary to Extraordinary. Timorous readers may take heart from watching little Audrey rise to the occasion. --John Peters
