Summary

Summary

The art, culture, and mythology of ancient Greece still exert powerful influences on modern civilization. This attractive and authoritative books opens up the fascinating world of the Greeks to young readers.
A section of thematic "trails" begins the book, for children with an interest in a particular topic who may not be sure where to start in the A to Z entries. Each "trail" identifies the core entries for topics such as gods and goddesses, everyday life, or the Trojan War. Color-keyed icons beside the entries help readers follow the "trail," while related topics are suggested to encourage browsing and wider reading. Thus the young reader gains confidence in using a reference book in an enjoyable way.
Approximately two hundred fifty alphabetical entries-each illustrated in full color-survey the history, art, myths, culture, and everyday life of the ancient Greeks. For ages nine and up.

Author Notes

Sean Sheehan was brought up in London but every summer holiday was spent in Ireland and only glimpses from train windows on journeys from Euston to Holyhead suggested that other places existed. After adult years of travelling and living in Southeast Asia Sean now has his home in Ireland.

Publisher's Weekly Review

Readers who like a more in-depth approach to mythology will appreciate Sean Sheehan's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece. Marked by icons, "trails" such as "Gods & Goddesses," "Myths" and "Writers" guide readers to entries that will amplify each theme.
