Geology is a societal science relevant to people's daily lives, providing facts and observations about global change on a regional to planetary scale. Yet, many geology books often fail to convey this relevance, and hence the dynamic nature of Earth and the evolution of life are not as widely understood or appreciated as they should be. Redfern is a most welcome contributor to an explanation of the principal causes and consequences of global change through the 700 million-year plate tectonic history of the Earth. Chapters are organized chronologically from oldest to youngest events in Earth's history and contain nicely photographed essays of various places throughout the northern hemisphere; accompanying text contains the scientific information with rich illustrations and diagrams and provides a paleogeographic reconstruction of Earth in a particular time frame. One can read the chapters independently in any order. Although written in an easy-to-follow scientific language, the book is full of technical terms that would appeal to the geologists. Readers who wish to learn more about the geological and biological history of Earth will appreciate and enjoy this book. Comprehensive index; glossary; detailed bibliography.
