Booklist Review

Ages 3-7. An animal rescue story is at the heart of the third tender picture book about the dog Ebb and the little girl, Flo. Everyone in the houseboat is too busy to play with Ebb. When Ebb investigates a cry she hears from the beach, she finds a baby seal, and the animals play together all day long. When night comes, the baby seal has nowhere to go, so Ebb barks for help, until Flo and Mom follow Ebb to the seal. Then they all row out to Seal Island to reunite the baby with its mom. Always close to the viewpoint of the small dog (and the small child), Simmons' light-filled, double-page watercolors combine coziness and adventure. The busy warmth inside the small houseboat contrasts with the wildness of the big blue sky and the stormy ocean. Young children will love the drama of being lost and coming home. They'll also enjoy talking about the rescue as a conservation story. A tale with strong child appeal. --Hazel Rochman

Publisher's Weekly Review

With her mother's help, Flo and her dog, Ebb, reunite a wayward baby seal with its waiting mother in Ebb & Flo and the Baby Seal by Jane Simmons. The misty watercolors perfectly suit the seaside setting of this duo's third outing. ( Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1-It's a rainy day-"Pitter, patter, pitter, patter, pitter, patter, whoosh!"-and Ebb, a winsome little dog, longs for someone to play with. Flo, Mom, and Bird are all busy, so Ebb investigates the "Wah! Wah!" sound she hears on the beach. She discovers a baby seal, and the two play together until Ebb gets hungry and decides it's time to go home. Then she realizes the baby seal needs help, so she fetches Flo and her mother. In a warmly satisfying conclusion, they realize that the animal is lost and reunite the baby with her mother. Ebb is a delightful doggy heroine in this deceivingly simple story. The repetitive sounds of the rain, and phrases such as "Flo followed Mom, Ebb followed Flo, and the baby seal followed Ebb," will appeal to young listeners. Simmons's lovely, impressionistic watercolors are perfectly suited to depicting an adventurous wet day on the coast.-Robin L.
