Summary

This exciting new series gives readers an intimate glimpse into the lives of intriguing creatures. Each chapter begins with a list of interesting facts to whet the reader's appetite. "I Didn't Know That" boxes introduce little-known facts as well. Readers learn why these species behave as they do; how they feed, communicate, and reproduce; and how pollution and habitat destruction are impacting their populations.

Booklist Review

Gr. 4-7. From the smallest ants to the largest whales, books in the Secret World Of series thoroughly investigate animal life in a visually interesting and readable way. Each volume focuses on a particular species or group of species, exploring its habitat, its members, its behavior, its mating habits, its enemies, and the threats to its future. Bulleted facts lead off, with a featured little-known tidbit designed to entice children to read on for more information. Color photographs, a useful glossary, and suggestions for further readings add to the usefulness of each volume. The accessible presentation and clear writing style combined with a high level of detail make the series valuable for simple reports and as a good transition between simple picture books and more serious research materials. --Heather Hepler
