School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up-Hoekstra has crafted a tight drama that introduces Kathryn, an anorexic. While most of her friends are working or playing during vacation, this troubled 16-year-old spends the summer in the hospital with other sufferers. Through a carefully blocked plot and inner dialogue, readers explore the teen's mindset as the mystery of her illness unfolds in a way that will fascinate and educate readers. Kathryn, who eventually does master her self-destructive behavior, and her fellow patients, who do not, explore life and the usual adolescent preoccupations through the murky veil imposed by the illness that masks deeper psychological problems and stumps doctors, patients, and families alike. The resulting tale creates multidimensional understanding of those who suffer from the disorder.-Lisa Denton, J. S. Russell JHS, Lawrenceville, VA (c) Copyright 2010.
