Booklist Review

The beauty of Tuscany comes alive in Donaldson's chronicle of two Australians who operate a plant nursery near the walled town of Volterra. The story she tells contains familiar elements: a couple fall in love with the region and begin a new life in Italy, after managing somehow to buy a large property complete with derelict buildings. Some 13 years later, the hard work accomplished by Don Leevers and Lindsay Megaritty has put their home, Venzano, on the itinerary of an international roster of gardening enthusiasts. Recounting the development of Venzano's gardens, nursery business, and rental apartments, Donaldson's spirited writing captures a wonderfully intimate portrayal of the hardships Leevers and Megaritty contended with and the successes achieved. The distinctive personality of each man shines through the engaging narrative, enlivened by abundant color photographs of the buildings, garden design, and surrounding landscape. Moreover, plentiful plant portraits represent a trove of horticultural selections proven to thrive in a Mediterranean-type climate. --Alice Joyce
