Choice Review

This excellent, full-color guide to wildflowers of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont includes many found throughout parts of the eastern US and adjacent Canada. Following the same format as Wildflowers of New York, by William K. Chapman et al. (CH, May'99), the book is divided into six parts by flower color (white, pink to red, yellow to orange, green, blue to violet, dark purple to brown); each is subdivided according to flower symmetry and leaf characteristics. Nomenclature follows that of the Revised Checklist of New York State Plants (1997), by Richard S. Mitchell and Gordon C. Tucker. Plants are listed first by common name, then species (with authority) and family names, followed by flowering season, flower description, plant habitat, and comments. Excellent full-color photographs labeled with common and scientific names are adjacent to each text page for easy use. A visual glossary follows with floral parts, flower types, and leaf type, parts, arrangement, margins, tips, and leaf/petal bases, along with a glossary. Indexes of common names and genera/species. A listing of additional sources of information would make this attractive, sturdy, well-bound guide more useful to the beginner. A suitable addition for most libraries; particularly desirable for smaller, more limited library collections. All levels. K. T. Settlemyer emeritus, Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania
