Choice Review

The fifth edition of Day's useful guide to some 2,500 political party organizations worldwide is the successor to a 1996 edition. During these eight years the evolution of political parties has been dramatic, particularly in Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe: Day counts 400 new ones (in spite of electoral decline in mature democracies). The book is alphabetically arranged by country, and party names generally are given in English, with original (or transliterated) names and initials following. It has two substantial indexes, one of personal names, the other of party names in relevant languages. A companion volume, Revolutionary and Dissident Movements (last published in 1991; CH, Jun'92), is planned for this year. Recommended for all levels. D. W. Heron emeritus, University of California
