Booklist Review

Gr. 3-6. Writing in first person, Swinburne describes his hunt for a bobcat--an animal he's seen only once in the wild because it's a master at hiding. The bobcat he meets is in a small zoo in New York. He also he goes tracking the animals with naturalists, including a group of sixth-grade sleuths. Swinburne makes the search for the bobcat a real adventure; his text is immediate and interesting throughout. Boxes of "bobcat facts" offer information about size, habits, tracks, etc. The color photographs are very clear and appealing, though some are on the small side. The book will get readers thinking about the relationship between animals and their prey and "America's war on predators." Settlers saw all predators as vermin to be exterminated, but though the bobcat has been hunted for more than 200 years, as many as 1.5 million may still live in the U.S. A short reading list is appended, but no Web sites are noted. --Ilene Cooper

School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-7-Swinburne's account of attempting to track and spot a small, powerful predator in Vermont includes treks made with professional naturalists and a trip made with a sixth-grade class. The attractive book, made up of a prologue and four short chapters, incorporates details about the animal's life in its natural habitat and in captivity. Most of the plentiful full-color photographs were taken by the author and by a habitat specialist, who also appears in the book. Occasional insets add factual information and make comparisons with other species. The author's respect for the bobcat's survival skills-"You and I may never see a wild bobcat, but I want to know they are out there"-and his first-person experiences lend an inviting immediacy. Readers who are fond of big cats or intrigued by wild animals will enjoy these glimpses of the physical characteristics and behavior of this elusive, sharp-eared, short-tailed wild cat.-Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston (c) Copyright 2010.
