Booklist Review

Gr. 4-7. These titles in the new Wild Rides! series feature topics rarely covered in books for young people. Lowriders defines the vehicle and describes typical features, following with discussion of the cars' history, competitions, and regional types. BMX gives a brief but solid introduction to the evolution of the sport, explains the bike's structure and parts, and takes a quick look at competitive riding, ending with a page-long biography of a leading rider. Filled with enticing color photos and written in short, straightforward sentences, these books will attract reluctant readers with a penchant for cool wheels of all types. The concluding resource section, listing a few other series titles and Web sites, is weak, but the books contain enough technical information to support report writing as well as personal interest. Check the Series Roundup, this issue, for more books in the series. --Gillian Engberg
