Booklist Review

This alphabetically arranged set details the history, geography, economy, people, culture, and current political situation of close to 200 nations and political or geographic units. The first volume begins with a general introduction to the set and a world map. Entries consist of at least a two-page spread on each country, and longer entries are divided into sections that cover two pages each and consider various aspects of the subject. For example, Argentina is divided into "Argentina Today," "Environment," "People," "Gauchos," "Buenos Aires," "Economy," and "History." Bangladesh is divided into "Bangladesh Today," "Life on the River," "People," and "A Country at Risk." Each entry also has a fact box containing geographical and political information, national seals and flags, charts, graphs, and statistics; maps (including maps of major cities); and, in some cases, a time line. Numerous full-color pictures and reproductions help create visually appealing pages that present information in manageable blocks. The text should be accessible to elementary-school students, but the writing tends to be dry. Individual articles are unsigned, but the same list of contributors (researchers, writers, etc.) appears in each volume. There are no bibliographies or suggestions for further reading. The only index is located in the last volume. It is quite detailed, with references to maps appearing in boldface. This set's closest competitors are Lands and Peoples [RBB Jl 97] and Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations [RBB My 1 96]. Of the three, the World Book set is probably the best choice for younger readers. It is arranged alphabetically, like the nine-volume Junior Worldmark, but does not provide the same amount of detail. Visually, the World Book encyclopedia is more similar to Lands and Peoples in that both sets feature numerous full-color reproductions, charts, graphs, insets, and highlights. However, the six volumes of Lands and Peoples are arranged continent by continent according to geographic proximity, and the set stresses a more global view. Articles tend to be longer in Lands and Peoples as well. Togo has a two-page spread in World Book and five pages in Lands and Peoples; World Book covers the U.S. in 46 pages versus 168 pages in Lands and Peoples. Lands and Peoples also features additional special-interest volumes; Special Edition: The Changing Face of Europe accompanied the 1997 edition. Students in higher-level classes with curricula that stress regional comparisons and contrasts will appreciate the geographically clustered layout of Lands and Peoples, as well as the regional overviews that introduce each volume. Students working on assignments that require the collection of basic facts and figures will find that all three resources meet their needs, but less-experienced researchers will appreciate the simplified access and presentation found in World Book's set. Although not as comprehensive as either Junior Worldmark or Lands and Peoples, it is a little more user-friendly for younger researchers or limited-English-proficient patrons. For most public and school collections, Lands and Peoples remains a first priority, with Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations right behind. The World Book Encyclopedia of People and Places certainly deserves consideration as an auxiliary selection for collections that serve younger readers and novice researchers.
