Choice Review

Those who prefer the feel and smell of a book to a description on the Web will embrace this volume when they head to the White Mountains, Newport, Down East, or anywhere else in New England. One of a series of seven guides compiled and published by the Siegels (others cover mid-Atlantic, South Atlantic, Midwestern, central, and Pacific Coast states, and Canada), it lists more than 950 dealers, providing name, address, phone, fax, e-mail, a description of the stock and specialties, whether credit cards are accepted, owner's name, and hours. The authors include their personal observations for dealers they visited (i.e., those with predominantly hardcover general collections). Since the information provided comes from questionnaires completed by dealers, not all the categories appear in every shop's entry. For each state, there is an alphabetical index by dealer and a geographical index. Open shops and "by appointment" dealers are arranged by location within each state, and mail order dealers are listed alphabetically at the end of each state entry. Also provided are 17 state, regional, and city maps (not to scale), and a useful and extensive specialty index, general (Americana, children's, travel) to specific (hot air balloons, tennis, Wodehouse). Annual supplements cost $2.50. An online subscription version, Used Book Lover's Guides , provides multiple search options, continuously updated information, and additional trip planning aids. Recommended for public and academic libraries, especially in New England. J. D. Haskell Jr. College of William and Mary
