School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-An eye-appealing layout, lively text, and timing that's perfect for the upcoming Salt Lake City games of 2002 combine to make this book a winner. It will also be a useful reference source after the games due to the 17 pages on the history, race strategies, origin of each sport, equipment design and its bearing on performance, and a very readable summary of the rules. Highlights from previous Olympics, quotes from athletes, the worldwide focus, and the accounts of thrilling moments and controversies keep readers wanting to know more. Men and women are given equal coverage, as far as possible (women still don't have ski-jumping competition in the Olympics and weren't allowed in many other sports during earlier games). Freestyle skiing, short-track speed skating, and snowboarding, three recent additions to the games, are given fair treatment. In the biography section, 27 athletes (9 from the U.S.) from 11 different sports are profiled. Final sections include a list of sites of previous games since they officially began in 1924, the top medal-winning countries in each game, and gold-medal times and winners. The full-color action photographs, colorful headings and subheadings, and sidebars with interesting facts are an added bonus and make this book immensely readable and informative.-Michael McCullough, Byron-Bergen Middle School, Bergen, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
