Author Notes

Irene Scobbie (B.A., Durham; M.A., Cambridge) began her academic career as a lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Swedish at Cambridge University. She has since been Reader (Full Professor) and Head of Scandanavian Studies at Aberdeen University and then at Edinburgh University, Scotland. Her publications include specialized studies in modern Swedish literature and more general works on Swedish history and society. In 1986 she was awarded the Swedish Polar Star for services to literature and culture.
