Booklist Review

Author Burki, an economist with a distinguished career in the Pakistani administration, also wrote the previous editions of this title, published in 1991 and 1999. For this edition he added several entries on what he calls the \lquote Muslimization' and \lquote Islamization' of Pakistani society. New coverage reflects events since the terrorist attack on the U.S. in 2001 as well as the earthquake of October 8, 2005, and Pakistan's economic growth, among the highest in the developing world. The volume is part of the publisher's Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East series. --Mary Ellen Quinn Copyright 2007 Booklist

Choice Review

Burki has added more than 150 pages in completely revising the 1991 edition (CH, Feb'92) of this helpful reference source. The dictionary section contains far more entries from all time periods, not just from the 1990s. Articles on the contemporary period have been updated to include recent information. The bibliography has been significantly expanded; now books and articles on a subject are together rather than in two sequences. Many more citations appear; most additions are for works published before 1991, except for "Nuclear policy" and "Economics," where most works date from the 1990s. The price is steep but the revision is worthwhile and useful. D. C. Johnson; University of Minnesota
