School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 6-As with A Child's Celebration of Soul (Feb. 2001, p. 69), this is an upbeat anthology of 11 country songs with child-appeal, sung by well-known celebrities. The tunes include "Playin' in the Same Band" (Charlie Daniels); "I'm My Own Grandpaw" (Chet Atkins); "Get in Line" (Tracy Byrd); "Big Country" (Little Texas); "Before You Grow" (Faith Hill); "Grandma's Feather Bed" (Brenda Lee); "One Hundred Years from Now" (Michael Martin Murphey);"The Nature of Things" (Randy Travis); "Family Is" (Cleve Francis); "Anishinabe" (Bill Miller); and "Angel Kisses" (Crystal Gayle). Musically, the album covers a wide variety of influences within the country music setting, including boot stomping dance music ("Get in Line"), a Cajun style waltz ("Family Is"), a pop-flavored ballad ("Before You Grow") and an Appalachian sounding lullaby ("Angel Kisses"). In addition, the multi-talented Lisa Silver not only produced the album, but wrote or co-wrote eight of the songs and plays fiddle on "Angel Kisses." Besides fiddles and guitars, other instruments include mandolin, jaw harp, wooden flutes, and accordion. There is no lyric sheet. This is an excellent introduction to country music for children.-Beverly Bixler, San Antonio Public Library, TX (c) Copyright 2010.
