Summary

All about the history of Thanksgiving, and how the holiday is celebrated today in the United States.

Booklist Review

Gr. 2very nice introductions in the Holidays and Festivals series combine easily understood texts and fresh, appealing art. Both books give histories of their holidays. Valentine's Day examines its origins as a Roman festival and introduces the real St. Valentine. Celebrations of the holiday around the world, and especially in the U.S., complete the treatment. Thanksgiving talks about the first Thanksgiving, but an afterword explains that some Wampanoag Indians no longer see this as a time for celebration. The history of the holiday through the centuries is covered as are some of Thanksgiving's popular traditions: parades, football games, feasts. It's odd that Flanagan introduces both of these days as American holidays since Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries and her own book notes there is a Canadian Thanksgiving. Still, these are just about what anyone could want from a primary series on holidays. Bibliographies and Web sites are appended, along with suggestions for making the holidays more pleasurable for others. See the Series Roundup below for other titles. --Ilene Cooper

School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-4-These books, which are particularly strong in the information category, address a number of topics over one or two spreads. The useful, accurate texts answer such questions as why we say, "Trick or Treat!" on Halloween or why the heart is a symbol of Valentine's Day. They are illustrated with full-page artwork. The pictures in Halloween feature bold colors and black outlines. Those in the other two titles are softer and less vibrant; Thanksgiving's are somewhat static. These titles are comparable to Gail Gibbons's nonfiction holiday offerings in their simplicity but have more information and are better organized.-Betsy Barnett, Eads School District, CO (c) Copyright 2010.
