School Library Journal Review

Gr 3 Up-This new edition has many differences and improvements over the original (Millbrook, 1993), including a much longer glossary and more information on determining condition, inserts, shows, Internet buying and selling, the future of collecting, and Web sites. However, the first edition has better illustrations-nearly all are larger and have more legible text. Owens writes in a light, entertaining style, starting with the history of the baseball-card industry from its beginnings in 1869. He goes into detail about how to determine the all-important condition of cards and tells how the Internet has changed collecting. The valuable section on card shows even tells the best time to approach a dealer to get a bargain. Some of the players pictured are not identified, and at times illustration and text are not juxtaposed. However, these are minor drawbacks to a sure hit.-Kate Kohlbeck, Randall School, Waukesha, WI (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
