Summary

Summary

20th Century Fashion is a time capsule of clothing for every decade from the 1900s through the 1990s. This exciting series presents style and design as they relate to the world events, people, politics, social change, and technology of each era. Dynamic text and colorful images, along with a fashion time line that places clothing design alongside other world events, capture the glamour and artistry of fashion. Also enjoy our companion series 20th Century Design, which documents the evolution of design (page 55).

From delicate tea gowns to the excesses of Paul Poiret, 1900-20 charts the rise of the suffragettes, the birth of jazz, and the impact of the automobile on couture.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 5 Up-These titles allow readers to put fashion and designers into the context of history and the social mores of their times. Exceptional graphic design and the use of authentic primary documents such as magazine covers and layouts, photos of famous people, and original design sketches enhance the presentations. All three books are written in a lively style that clearly explains the relationship between function, media, and fashion. One example is how the automobile prompted the popularity of motoring garb such as dusters, goggles, and veiled hats. Media influence is evidenced by the gangster suits of the `30s and the homespun Hollywood glamour of the `40s. Each volume includes a spread on "The Technology of Fashion." Time lines include "Fashion," "World Events," "Technology," "Famous People," and "Art & Media." Comparable to John Peacock's 20th Century Fashion (1993) and "Fashion Sourcebooks" series (all Thames & Hudson), these newer titles will appeal to younger students for research projects and leisure reading.-Betsy Barnett, Eads School District, CO (c) Copyright 2010.
