School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up-A brief introduction sets the stage, citing some of the criticisms and controversies associated with this play. The concise but thorough biography of Shakespeare that follows, though dry, is the easiest chapter to understand and gives a clear account of his life. An explanation of the history behind the play is then followed by chapters detailing the plot and characters. Finally, a literary analysis tackles the main themes and ideas and discusses them in the context of plot and characterization. An excellent grouping of notes and bibliographies points interested students toward additional readings. Though the rich vocabulary isn't for lower-ability students, most freshmen would be able to comprehend the essays. Advanced literature students will gain much more from this resource than from "Cliffs Notes" because of the depth of the analysis. The black-and-white illustrations scattered throughout depict scenes from the play and from Shakespeare's life.-Toni D. Moore, Simon Kenton High School, Independence, KY (c) Copyright 2010.
