School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up-A book that looks at tough questions regarding cause and effects of school violence in our society. Chapters address its scope, roots, the media's role, and gangs and guns in schools. The recent media coverage concerning the Columbine incident is interwoven into discussions of acts of violence committed on school grounds. Possible reasons include in-home abuse or neglect; substance abuse; violent music, TV, video games; and an increase in gang and gang wanna-be activities. Jones also explores the constitutionality of invading the privacy of all students in order to unearth the "bad" ones. He poses questions to determine better ways to prevent damage to school property and protect teachers' and students' rights to have a safe school environment. Willingness to experiment with solutions customized to individual community needs seems to be the key. Possible solutions include zero-tolerance acts, school uniforms, stricter state and federal gun control, and community support. Information is drawn from a wide, reputable assortment of sources, and the representation of sides of the issues is fair, if dry. Black-and-white photos, graphs, and cartoons are scattered throughout.-Kim Harris, Newman Riga Library, Churchville, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
