School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-12-Web Workshop Pro helps students without knowledge of HTML or the use of complex WYSIWYG software create web pages. Although older or more technically astute students may be better served by more sophisticated instruction, such as Macromedia's Dreamweaver or Microsoft's Front Page, this program offers a solution for younger, inexperienced users. No installation is required. Users begin with an initial site management screen. Under the "Global" tab, users are prompted to enter metatags in the form of keywords and description. Colors and font chosen at this point apply to all pages within the site. This initial organization is a nice touch, helping students to focus on planning and providing a consistent look and feel to a possible 32 pages per site. Other tabs guide users' progression through development by providing options for Text, Images, Buttons, Lines, and Media. Links are easily inserted for internal and external sites. The program comes with a built in library of images, buttons, lines, and movies (60 film clips emphasizing space and nature). These elements may all be "dragged and dropped" for design purposes, and external images, movies, and sounds may be imported. The image collection contains thematic clipart, including some suitable for ancient history. Buttons may be created with personalized text. Sliders control the size of images and text. Images have a nice transparency and may be layered effectively. The program also guides users in publishing a Web site by saving to a local server, an ISP server, or Sunburst's own web server, where student pages may be hosted free of charge. This latter function did not work in preview. The strengths of the program are the precise procedures within the program, which put Web creation and publication within everyone's reach. Weaknesses include sawing and hammering sounds that accompany every action in the workshop, which can be turned off under Options, and the limited types of files with which the program is compatibleAgif, jpeg, mp3, wav, mov, and avi. No sound files are included with the program, and no mention is made of animation. Sound files and animations are available in a similar program from Knowledge Adventure, SiteCentral (Oct. 2000, p. 102), which also offers F/X Workshop that permits students to adjust images for hue and intensity and to work with photos more extensively. The accompanying guide is clear and concise. The teacher's portion of the guide includes excellent, basic advice for classroom projects, lesson plan sites, designing rubrics for web page assessment, copyright issues, and a model acceptable use policy. This program is best suited to the younger end of the suggested grade range or inexperienced users.-Melba Tomeo, Slippery Rock University, PA (c) Copyright 2010.
