Booklist Review

Traditionally strong on U.S. and Canadian topics, Encyclopedia Americana (EA) continues to improve its international scope. Major survey articles are lengthy. For example, the revised entry on Canada runs approximately 200 pages. To help users find information in these major articles, EA divides the article into appropriate sections (e.g., Canada has 49 sections, with a mini^-table of contents at the article's start providing quick access points). For the print edition of EA, only 1,400 to 1,800 pages can be set and manufactured anew each year. Thus, revisions focus on articles the editors deem significant for students and researchers. In the 2000 edition, 1,170 articles in 1,413 text pages were revised. In area studies, special attention was paid to Canada in consideration of the creation of Nunavut. An entry on the territory and a related article on Inuit are new this year. There is also a new entry on the causes and consequences of the Irish Famine of the 1840s. Of the U.S. states, Florida's entry underwent a major revision. Country updates include the transfer of the German government from Bonn to Berlin, the establishment of the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly, Taiwan-China relations, and the earthquake in Turkey. New and revised Hammond maps provide maps for Canada, North America, and Great Britain. Revisions to Eastern European maps reflect border and place-name changes. Social studies saw 70 new articles and 300 revised or replaced. Of these, approximately 30 new articles address landmark Supreme Court decisions. There are new or revised biographies of political figures such as Pol Pot, Suharto, and King Hussein of Jordan. In the visual and performing arts, nine articles are new in print (e.g., Pictorialism, Grammy Award, and biographies of Edouard-Denis Balders and Isabelle Vengerova); six are replacements (e.g., Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney, Frank Stella); and 15 are major revisions (e.g., Academy Award, Mary Pickford). There are obituaries for Stanley Kubrick, Yehudi Menuhin, George C. Scott, and Robert Shaw. Biography dominates the new and revised literature articles (e.g., those on Grass, Jack Kerouac, Primo Levi, and Salman Rushdie and obituaries for Eric Ambler, Ted Hughes, and Iris Murdoch). The main focus of life sciences is coverage of dinosaurs, with the main survey article replaced and 11 new satellite entries created. The accompanying artwork now reflects modern theories of dinosaurs. Among other revisions are the updating of chemistry articles, which now include elements 114, 116, and 118, and a revised biography of John Glenn. Compared to this year's other print encyclopedias, EA articles offer more in-depth coverage, and its breadth and depth continue to make it an excellent resource for grades eight and up. The New Book of Knowledge. 21v. 2000. Grolier, $699 (0-7172-0531-2). Substantial changes continue to be made in the content, design, and illustration of The New Book of Knowledge (NBK) as part of the overall major revision begun in 1992. For the 2000 edition, a total of 987 pages of text were revised and reset. As part of its ongoing plan, NBK continues to update and enhance the articles on countries. The base article on Canada has been completely replaced, and the revision on its 10 provinces and three territories has been completed. Information on Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and the relationship of English and French Canadians has been updated and revised. The article on the Canadian government now includes profiles of all of the prime ministers since confederation. The base articles on Central and Latin America have been replaced. Among the 31 new articles are several treating popular topics--Manatees; Schindler, Oskar; Special Olympics. Other new articles include Capital punishment, Cold war, Geneva Conventions, Genocide, Greenpeace, Spanish Armada, and Violence and society. Juvenile crime, Science fiction, and Wales are among the 28 articles that have been replaced, and another 26 articles were completely updated. Particular care has been devoted to updating content in science and technology. Brain, Genetics, Science, and Telecommunications are among the articles that have been rewritten and redesigned; Space exploration and travel, Telephone, and Television are among those that have been substantially revised. Thirty-five new maps replaced existing ones: all five Canadian maps were replaced, as well as the ones for 17 other countries and regions. More than 434 new photographs (28 in black and white and 406 in color) and 58 pieces of color art were added to the set. Some 237 new titles were added to the bibliographies in the separate "Home and School Reading and Study Guides." The print revision deadline extended into November so that the 1999 Nobel prize winners, the results of the 1999 Baseball World series, the death of Walter Payton, and Hillary Rodham Clinton's announcement of her intention to run for the Senate seat from New York could be included. Postdeadline events that made their way into the set include the December 31 resignation of Boris Yeltsin and the outcome of Superbowl XXXIV. Most articles are signed, many by both their authors and by experts who have reviewed the content. The print NBK is attractive, well bound, and contains many useful features. The "Home and School Reading and Study Guides" contain up-to-date bibliographies and have suggestions for activities. The maps, flags, color illustrations, and time lines that accompany the concise information continue to make NBK a fine resource for both home and school use.
