Summary

Summary

A collection of 40 selections from some of the most important contemporary plays and playwrights of the 1990s. The book reflects current trends where small theatre groups proliferate, women and minorities have a growing influence, and drama has become a truly international art form. Includes monologues, duets and four complete ten-minute plays.

Choice Review

Scene and monologue books for actors seeking material for acting classes and auditions abound. Compared with others, this collection--its title notwithstanding--fails to suggest the richness and diversity of what is currently being performed in theaters across the nation. Scenes from Tony Kushner's Angels in America, Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, and Marsha Norman's Trudy Blue are among the exceptions. Most of the selections, including a number taken from the Humana Festival at the Actors Theater of Louisville, are far less interesting. Not recommended for academic collections. R. Sugarman; emeritus, Southern Vermont College
