Choice Review

Most readers will be disappointed by this latest reference source for film music. Although Craggs (Univ. of Sunderland) claims to list more than 500 international composers, it is not clear whether they are writers of full scores, incidental music, songs, or other. For example, the entry for Stephen Sondheim includes Reds but not Dick Tracy or The Seven Percent Solution. Biographical information is minimal to nonexistent, with data often confined to birth and death years and country where the composer works. A spot check of the free Internet Movie Database usually located information more complete and in greater depth than Craggs offers. His film title index by itself comprises a third of the volume, but no information is anywhere provided about individual pieces from scores. Craggs includes a few notes about CD recordings, but many more are omitted (at least those that are available in the US). Although Craggs's is the only work of its kind in printed form (Steve Harris's Film and Television Composers, CH, Jul'92, is solely a discography), the contents do not justify the expense. Not recommended. A. J. Adam; Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University
