School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-7‘Brief introductions to two of the world's great cities. Arranged into short chapters, each title explores the history, foods, games, social activities, and religion of the capital and surrounding area. A world map on the contents page indicates where the city is located. A note on the copyright page offers a pronunciation guide and ways in which the language (Chinese/Arabic) differs from English. Phonetic pronunciations are provided for unfamiliar words on the pages on which they appear. The design of the books is attractive. Plenty of white space is left around the texts and interesting and well-produced full-color photos and/or reproductions appear on every page. Despite the heavily pictorial format and frequent depiction of preschool and primary-grade children, the content and vocabulary are clearly for an older audience than the books' appearance might indicate. Captions add to the information presented. The final pages of each title are devoted to landmarks, a list of fast facts, and simple maps of the featured city.‘Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS (c) Copyright 2010.
