Booklist Review

Gr. 1^-2. Here's an effective way to get some bang for your buck. Each book features stories (or book excerpts) from several well-known writers with the original illustrations. Pet has Rylant's Henry and Mudge stories, selections from Hoff's Danny and Dinosaur, some poetry, and several other offerings. School features short works with Amanda Pig, Amelia Bedelia, and a Valentine's Day story with Emmie, Jack, and Leo (pictures by Steven Kellogg). The stories here, collected by the editors at North-South, were apparently Reading Rainbow selections (as indicated by a cover banner, "Reading Rainbow Readers"), so libraries may have the originals in several different editions. Nevertheless, this thematically brings together a nice mix of offerings in an easy-to-read format. --Ilene Cooper
