Booklist Review

Gr. 2^-4. Straightforward text combines with exciting, good-quality photos in these two titles in the new Wild Bears! series. Both volumes briefly address the species' population, physical characteristics, diet, hibernation, and mating habits. Panda mentions the bears' endangered status and the preserves set up to protect them. Children in the lower middle grades will easily grasp the language; words such as migrate and crepuscular are defined in the text and, in most cases, again in a concluding glossary. The nicely designed, logical format makes good use of the visuals, including a map showing the distribution, a facts section, and the striking photos, which illustrate the specific information on each page. Despite a few grammatical errors (affect instead of effect, for example), these titles offer a solid introduction to intriguing species, with sharp visuals that will excite young readers. --Gillian Engberg
