Booklist Review

As you would expect of the most recently elevated Nebula Grand Master, Clement has produced one of the best bodies of work in hard-science sf. His approach has always been to postulate a problem derived from a scientific or technological premise, such as the odd planetary environment in "Planetfall," and then to present characters who apply logic, reason, and factual knowledge to devise a solution. Even readers who don't share Clement's rationalist optimism must recognize the excellence of his storytelling, characterization, and command of the English language--all qualities that are far from consistently good in hard-science sf. Every reader will pick favorites among the 17 stories in this collection, but try "Planetfall," "Mechanic," "Technical Error," and "Stuck with It" as an introduction to Clement. Editors Olson and Lewis must be commended for compiling a Clement sampler that reaffirms the high ambitions and revalidates the sound execution of the New England Science Fiction Association's reprint program. --Roland Green
