School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up-Meehan profiles John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, James Baldwin, Flannery O'Connor, and Toni Morrison. Each well-crafted entry includes both personal and professional information that helps students understand the context in which each author wrote. Quotes help to illuminate the personalities behind the printed pages. The chapter on Faulkner is especially readable and insightful, and includes his famous Nobel acceptance speech. A wide variety of black-and-white photographs complement the text. Chapter notes are included, as is an annotated list for further reading and a detailed index. Although citations include references to the works of well-respected biographers such as James Campbell and Stephen B. Oates, the chapters on Steinbeck and Faulkner were written from only one source each. Another weakness is the scarcity of primary-source material. Also, for some reason, O'Connor is the only author not depicted on the cover. Nevertheless, this volume will be well used for literary research papers and will be a worthwhile introduction to these much-studied writers.-Marilyn Heath, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City (c) Copyright 2010.
