School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-9-Each of these titles profiles approximately 150 outstanding individuals who have contributed to the betterment of humankind throughout history in their chosen field of endeavor. Both books include an array of famous, lesser-known, and unfamiliar names from around the globe. Each succinct entry consists of two-to-four well-written, easy-to-read paragraphs that provide information on the woman's family, education, and contribution. Many period and current black-and-white photographs provide additional interest, as do the sidebars and quotes scattered throughout. A detailed time line helps to establish a historical context for the women's accomplishments. The comprehensive index and glossary are very useful. These biographies should spark further interest in these notable figures. Students doing research will need to find additional supplementary material, but those reading for pleasure will find these titles interesting and inspirational.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE (c) Copyright 2010.
