Summary

Summary

Our God is the great Creator. We see his handiwork in all he has made, from the wing of a bird to fruit on the vine. We see his power in the tiny mustard seed as well as the mighty whirlwind. Just as creation is stamped with God's character, so too his written word is full of images and metaphors that reveal the depth and wisdom of his truth.

Library Journal Review

Wiersbe, the well-known author of numerous Christian books, such as Be Joyful and Be Resolute, has produced a new biblical reference tool based on the text of the New International Version of the Bible. The purpose of this index is to locate and compare verses using the same or similar imagery within different contexts. For example, the section heading "Debt (See Also Account)" lists scripture references under the subheadings "Sin," "Love," "Appreciation," "Retribution," "Reward," "Grace," and "Discipline." This resource has its limits. The section heading "Divorce," for example, lists only two references from the Old Testament under the subheading "God's Discipline of Israel." Where are the references for the New Testament? (Four are listed in James Strong's Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, Thomas Nelson, 1997.) Similarly, only three New Testament references are listed under "Marriage," whereas Strong's gives many more. It is perhaps true that additional references may not necessarily deal with imagery per se, but it would have been helpful if they had been listed in italics for cross-referencing. Despite the drawbacks, this very handy reference for discovering meanings that might otherwise be overlooked makes a nice contribution to biblical studies. It is ideal for pastors, teachers, and students. Recommended for all public libraries.DMichael W. Ellis, Ellenville P.L., NY (c) Copyright 2010. Choice Review

Wiersbe (Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary) offers a useful volume with some important limitations. The biblical translation he uses is the New International Version. The volume begins with a helpful list of the terms used, arranged alphabetically. The beginning page for each letter is given; e.g., "B" terms begin on page 15. The main body of the work is an alphabetical list of words Wiersbe thinks are used in certain texts as simile, metaphor, or symbol, without indicating which of the three a word may be. Each term has alphabetically arranged subcategories, which show what the word stands for in the verse selected; e.g., under "Light/Lamp," subcategories include "God," "Christ," "God's Word/Truth," "Life/Vitality," and "Salvation," along with other terms. Under each subcategory word a list of scriptural references is given, arranged like the books in the Bible. The limitations of the volume begin with the fact that none of the biblical verses is printed, so readers must look up the verse. Edward Goodrick and John Kohlenberger's New International Bible Concordance (1981) would be an important supplementary tool. A second limitation is that selections are made by Wiersbe and hence depend on his judgment concerning whether a word is used figuratively and to what it refers; Isa. 42:6, for example, with New Testament texts under the word "Christ," shows a conservative bias. The volume fills a special niche and is therefore recommended, but it would be used most effectively in conjunction with larger works such as James Strong's The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible (rev. ed., 1997).
