Reviews 2

Booklist Review

New addition to the Magill's Choice series draws most of its content from Identities and Issues in Literature (1997). Some 217 works by 136 authors are treated.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up-For those libraries needing material on multicultural writers, this resource might be just the thing. The set examines the work of 136 authors, poets, and dramatists of African-American, Latino, Asian-American, Jewish-American, and Native American descent. The alphabetically arranged, signed entries are typically two-to-four pages in length and contain an average-quality, black-and-white photo of the author, biographical data, an analysis of one or two works (usually the most studied), and a bibliography. Identity and racial issues are discussed briefly. Some of the writers considered are: Ai, Sherman Alexie, Julia Alvarez, Saul Bellow, Nikki Giovanni, Tony Kushner, and Amy Tan. Three indexes (author, title, and ethnic identity) are provided. Most of the essays first appeared in the more comprehensive Identities and Issues in Literature (Salem, 1997); others were adapted from "Masterplots II" series titles. While the entries in Ethnic Writers are limited, they will provide quick summaries of important works and serve as a starting point for research on a number of writers.-Pat Bender, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA (c) Copyright 2010.
