Summary

Summary

Smokey Brandon's job, for a California crime lab, is to collect, analyze, and preserve the physical evidence of crimes. Evidence gathering is always tough, and when victims were found in outdoor locations, it was even tougher. Some slide into the coroner's van as Juan Does, as invisible in death as they seemed to be in life. Haunted by the death of a young female border-crosser and burdened with an increasing caseload, Smokey almost gives in to the futility. Then, links begin to emerge just as the anguished 20-year-old son of Smokey's lover confides a terrible secret and swears her to secrecy ...

Library Journal Review

Forensic specialist Smokey Brandon collects and analyzes evidence for a series of murder cases involving young HispanicsDall initially unidentified illegal immigrants to southern California. Ambiguous clues, grim autopsy findings, futile police procedure, personal stress from the sudden illness of Smokey's older police partner/lover, and disturbing criminal revelations from the partner's college-age son create a nerve-wracking but most satisfying quest for the truth. A well-focused and appealing series addition (after Carcass Trade and The World the Color of Salt) for all collections. (c) Copyright 2010.
