Summary

Summary

For ages 3 to 7 years. Yes, ArtStarts is Judy Press at her best! Kids will love imaginative arts and crafts; parents and teachers will love the early learning skill-builders tucked into every activity. And art is the perfect place for learning to start. It is memorable (who doesn't remember art made in kindergarten), creative, uses imagination, expresses feelings, and builds self-esteem and pride. Spark kids' creativity with the 'magical' wonders of paper, paint, markers, crayons, clay, glue, sandpaper, fabric, and yarn. Tickle kids' curiosity as they explore family, nature, animals, colours, days and nights through art experiences and learning discoveries. Kids soar as they build number confidence, express new-found verbal abilities, and expand their gross and fine motor skills. Invite kids of all ability levels to participate in easier 'Simple Starts' and more involved 'Puddle Jumpers'.

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2-These simple activities use easy-to-find materials such as egg cartons, paper plates, craft sticks, and paper-towel tubes. The directions are easy to follow and are supplemented with clear, black-line drawings of almost every step. The book is divided into eight thematic groups that include animals, seasons, transportation, colors, gardens, nighttime, and learning-related crafts. Each section contains four to eight projects assigned a skill level from one to three. The activities can be used to teach motor skills as well as an appreciation for artistic expression while nicely supplementing thematic units. Additional ideas, both simpler and/or more complex, are included in the sidebar accompanying each project. Suggestions for tying the activity to other subjects such as math or science and to picture books are also found here. This book is fresh and fun and offers ideas for extending the art experience.- Sarah Prielipp, Harrison Community Library, MI (c) Copyright 2010.
