Booklist Review

Ages 5^-8. As was Log Cabin Quilt (1996), Howard's latest book, set in Michigan during the frontier days, is rich in place and time. The death of Mam has hit Elvirey and her family hard, and they are barely holding up in the cold. There won't be any Christmas this year--no stockings, stick candy, or fruitcake, not even church. Elvirey can't broach the subject without being told to hush, but she can't keep her head from "talking." When her father snaps at her, she breaks down. Then remembering all the special things her mother did at Christmas, she puts a plan in action. Himler's beautiful illustrations reveal the shift in energy that happens as the sweet story progresses. The first few are somber, their backgrounds dark. But they brighten as Elvirey brings Christmas to the household: they glow with candlelight and with the warmth of family love. --Shelley Townsend-Hudson
