Library Journal Review

French scholars/editors Ayala and Gu‚no have compiled an ex post facto collection of the juvenilia of 84 "remarkable people," mostly writers, artists, and musicians, though a few scientists and others are included. The selection is chiefly French and weighted toward the 19th and 20th centuries. Each subject receives a one-page appreciative essay and several illustrations, usually of a manuscript, painting, score, or diary as appropriate. The documents of a dozen subjects are transcribed in full in an appendix. This visually attractive book gives a contextual taste for the youthful personalities of the subjects, if only just a snippet. But there is no overview or sustained analysis of the phenomenon it attempts to document, and the intended audience is unclear. A marginal choice. Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Libs.
