Publisher's Weekly Review

Nothing says "surf's up" like the sunny lyrics and high-pitched harmonies of the Beach Boys. Happily, some of that band's favorite tunes and their signature sound are captured in this collection of covers performed by a team of kid vocalists and accomplished musicians. The smooth harmonizing on songs like "Surfer Girl," "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "All Summer Long" is faithful to the originals and should make Mike Love and his bandmates proud. But this recording moves one step beyond re-creating the past; a more contemporary rock guitar sound and other slightly updated instrumentation, as well as snippets of kid-friendly dialogue, send it sailing smoothly into a new century. Other quintessentially beachy songs here include "Wipe Out," "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" and "Surfin' U.S.A." Young listeners will quickly catch the good vibrations here, and just in time for whatÄin a kid's world anyhowÄseems like an endless summer vacation. And adults may well enjoy a musical stroll down memory lane to seaside summers gone by. All ages. (May) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 3-Thirteen beach-themed tunes performed by young people make up this lively recording. Along with a generous helping of Beach Boys songs ("Fun, Fun, Fun," "Surfin' Safari," "Kokomo," and the title track), the album also includes kid-friendly favorites such as "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" and "Wipe Out." These versions are faithful to the fun feel of the originals, while adding some contemporary instrumentals. Adults and kids alike may find themselves singing along to this catchy variety of summery tunes, though some adults may be taken aback that the somewhat suggestive lyrics of "Kokomo" (featuring "afternoon delight" and "tropical drinks") have not been changed. This recording makes a suitable replacement for the lamentably no-longer-available Muppet Beach Party (Jim Henson Records, 1993), though the feeble surfer-talk punctuating Catch a Wave's version of "Wipeout" can't compare to Animal's spastic version. This is lively addition to any children's music collection.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD (c) Copyright 2010.
