School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up-A straightforward introduction to synthetic, addictive street drugs created in ``laboratories'' throughout the U.S. Clayton includes case-study scenarios that illustrate situations resulting from drug use/abuse and pose circumstances that will help readers to acquire realistic problem-solving skills and strategies for overcoming peer pressure and its associated temptations. The origins, manufacture, physical and psychological effects, and various methods of ingestion of such drugs as ecstasy, crack, china white, ice, angel dust, and crank are related in the brief, conversational text. Concluding chapters analyze reasons behind substance abuse, suggest alternatives, and provide information about where to get help. Black-and-white and full-color, staged photographs appear throughout. Michele McCormick's Designer-Drug Abuse (Watts, 1990) and Paula Goodman and Gabriel Koz's Designer Drugs (Chelsea, 1988) are both more in-depth in their presentations. Clayton's title is a good hi-lo alternative or lead in.-Celia A. Huffman, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland (c) Copyright 2010.
