Booklist Review

Gr. 6^-10. Books in the Encyclopedia of Psychological Disorders series (25 volumes are planned), pitched to assignment-driven teens, cover topics from schizophrenia to sibling rivalry. Each volume begins with an overview and ends with substantial lists of addresses, books, and other sources of information. In between is discussion of specific variations, warning signs, common misperceptions, and treatments. The largely generic, muddy black-and-white photos add little. Strange Visions is one of seven volumes related to drug abuse, and the examination of how the mentally ill affect American society takes up only a quarter of Mental Illness, the remainder being a sweeping rehash of the whole series. Nonetheless, these utilitarian titles not only furnish basic information on their subjects in a straightforward, reasonably convenient form but also carry a worthy common double message: that psychological disorders are not self-inflicted, and they can be treated. --John Peters
