Choice Review

Tilford's attractive guide for lay botanists interested in medicinal plants profiles 52 species with possible healing powers, endemic to the US. In addition to a botanical description, the author lists habitat and range, gathering guidelines, medicinal applications, and tips on propagation. A color photograph accompanies each entry. One chapter is devoted to the basics of making herbal preparations. Tilford has written a disclaimer assuming no liability for any toxic reactions, because self-medication with some of these plants may be dangerous. The reader is strongly recommended to seek training with a qualified professional in the identification and use of wild plants with potential healing properties. The book includes a list of herbal schools; sources for obtaining herb seeds, roots, and plant starts; some retail sources of herbal products; and a glossary. Suitable for general readers and undergraduates. L. W. Roberts; emeritus, University of Idaho
