Choice Review

The main purpose of this book seems to be the presentation of photographs (which average three per page) of 197 species of mostly common birds of the Cascade Mountains. Each photo has a short, mainly accurate, text on a facing page that gives a brief description and a thumbnail life history sketch. Although the photos (mainly by the author) vary from fair to excellent (but the one of the mountain quail seems clearly to be of a mounted specimen), the book adds little to the knowledge of these birds or their identification. Only about 60 percent of the species occurring in the region are noted, and there is no comparative treatment of similar species. A beginner will find one of the standard field guides such as R.T. Peterson's A Field Guide to Western Birds (3rd ed., CH, Oct'90) or National Geographic's Field Guide to the Birds of North America (CH, Jun'84) much more useful for identification purposes.
